I'm watching Stargate Atlantis preparatory to watching BSG second time around (rotten social committments) and I don't get the appeal. It's probably not fair to judge from one viewing (though I've seen snippets at other points) but compared to the original Stargate it does seem to have some issues with acting. People give each other highly meaningful glances and not much more. It's like they only have one mode: the highly meaningful moment o'doom, otherwise it's nada, zilch, nothing and shots of machinery. Did I just get a bad episode? If I'm going to invest in SciFi Friday I'd like to watch more of the shows they offer, but this didn't seem very interesting or even well-acted. At least the other Stargate gets actors who overcome the sometimes very cheesy scripts they are asked to mouth.

No- it's just not very good. I think that its biggest fans are somehow able to play a kind of virtual episode on top of the real one, and that's where the "Yay!" comes from.

I have managed this for other shows, usually in retrospect: I imagine them as having all sorts of virtues and then I see them one day and I think, wow, that was really, really horrible and had no redeeming features whatsoever. The awful thing iswhen you realise that have recommended it to others as being a really good show and now have to face them.

Can't help you out, because my reasons for liking it are very shallow. I like David Hewlett (the guy that plays McKay), and I actually do think he does a good job bringing the snark - and beyond that, I think Joe Flanigan (Major Sheppard) is hot. And that, in a nutshell, is the "appeal" for me. *g*

I'm all about the shallow too - I once used to watch *Smallville* and it wasn't for dialogue! You're right about Flanigan being hot, but I'm not sure that's enough at the moment... :-)
