I just got season 1 one of this and it is quite awesomely, epically bad. THERE IS AN AMAZING AMOUNT OF LEAPING AND SHRIEKING AND IMPROBABLE SWORDFIGHTING.

ALSO GABRIELLE MUST LOSE HER BLOOD INNOCENCE AND BECOME THE BRIDE OF MORPHEUS. IT'S QUITE WONDERFUL.

ETA: There is an astonishing and wonderful amount of bad hair. Such lovely, lovely bad hair. Also I am pretty sure someone just said 'my son died in childbirth.' Which is quite a feat really.

ETA 2: XENA AND GABRIELLE HAVE FOUND A BABY. IF HIJINKS DON'T ENSUE I WILL BE DISAPPOINTED.

ETA 3: And this is completely offtopic, but if you ever want to watch the most depressing film ever, you should all watch Kings, an Irish language film that manages to make most Russian novels look cheery.

Campy 90s TV (which actually covers to about 2001) is THE BEST THING EVER.

XENA IS SO VERY WONDERFUL. EVERYTIME SHE SHRIEKS HER WAR CRY I GROW ABOUT 9 MILLION TIMES HAPPIER.

YES IT IS BEAUTIFUL.

Also, i wonder now what you'd think about Adventures of Sinbad.

I suspect I would love it with a fiery passion.

LOOK AT THIS ICON THEY RE MENACED BY A GIANT CGI CRAB!!!

I...don't know if you can get it any way but DL, though? I think it was available on DVD in Canada a while back, but don't know if it still is.

It is on my list of things to watch. But now I shall have to waver between it and Legend of the Seeker. Does that have CGI crabs? THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT.

From: [identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com
It does not. Sinbad has: Giant CGI crabs, harpies, rock monsters, evil sorceresses who use magic to impersonate the hero they're in love with and attempt to seduce the hero's non-girlfriend, shrinking, aweinspiring cleavage, bad accents, spears bouncing off chests, lasers, men who were turned into animals, psychic links, and way more pretty colors. (The LOTS eps I've seen have been pretty focused on making things all dark and gloomy and shadowy, and I prefer bright and pretty colors.)

Even the trailers and features about Kings nearly destroyed me. Kudos for Irish film making but jeebus, I'd be a wreck after watching the entire thing.

Also, last week I had my guide unit practising outdoor trail signs and myself and the other leader made a mock up of a sword so we called it the sword of Xena and they had to follow the trails to find it. I don't think anyone asked who Xena was supposed to be so either they knew or thought we were making stuff up just because.

Kings: I knew it would be depressing, but not quite that depressing and to make it more depressing I guess now with the country going broke we're in for another round of people leaving (this past few weeks I ran into three girls in shops who'd just left Ireland for here).

I couldn't believe it when I could buy Kings on Amazon, though - it's so hard to find anything Irish language at all let alone widely distributed. And it is a good film; just really, really grim.

WHAT! First you are dissin Highlander and now Xena? Is nothing sacred? You know, when I watched it, I didn't even think about the bad hair. I was constantly wondering why Xena didn't get chaffed thighs from riding all over the place in hot pants and a leather bustier. Mind you, the show was a bit short on logic but wasn't that the point?

I am not dissing Xena!!! SHE IS MADE OF AWESOME. :p

Though I agree with you on the outfit being somewhat dangerous for the chaffing. And I do wonder a lot if Lucy Lawless was ever warm on that show, what with the tiny skirt and all.

Xena herself is THE MOST AWESOMEST THING EVER. Though, Xena was more prone to taking itself seriously at times, and so I ended up preferring Hercules as a show. (Also, at the time, I realize any of the difficulties when it came to portraying homosexuality on TV, especially for lead characters, and so I got annoyed at how it seemed they could never decide one way or the other if Xena and Gabrielle were bi/lesbian or not.)

I remember them dancing around what exactly the relationship was a lot, though I don't remember minding it as much, because then Xena would do HER WARCRY OF AWESOMENESS.

I think my annoyance was tied into my being a teen at that point.

I decided that they certainly WERE a couple and that their scenes together were too hot for TV. So there - take that, TV censors. But I also liked the implication that Xena could be bisexual. Butch and yet, so gorgeously feminine. That leather bustier featured in a lot of my fantasies and the fact that she seemed generously endowed was just an added bonus. I love a show that had Amazons AND Hercules AND Aries and Caesar. Plus, Xena's great war cry with she threw that circular boomerang of death and slew (slay?), anyway, whomped, kicked ass all over an imaginary Gerco-Roman-Mythical world. I was spoiled for the last couple of episodes and refused to watch them. In MY world, Xena and Gabrielle are still taking on the powers of darkness, evil doers and baddies while being always and truly in love.
So there. Thus endeth the lesson.

I probably won't watch Kings because I'm prone to depression but I'm glad Irish-language films are being made. Bangladeshi leftists are very conscious of language preservation struggles because of our own history, though there are contradictions in our own politics. Maybe if there's a sweet Irish-language children's film I might watch it, though I've never gotten around to using Netflix.

I certainly wouldn't watch Kings if I were prone to depression - I had to watch something cheery right away I was so down afterwards (though it is a good film). If you're interested, you can watch some fun stuff in Irish + subtitles streaming at http://www.tg4.ie/ I am particularly fond of the soap opera 'Ros na Run' :)

It is FANTASTIC. It's just the right kind of camp. There are HORSES, and magic, and mistaken identity and emo, impossible love. It's so, so great. (Too bad it's been canceled. I am so sad about that.)

I have seen...4 eps? The plot is TERRIBLY DULL (about as generic fantasy as you can get) and it has a bad habit of focusing on the dull plot and thinking the plot is serious even if the show is campy, BUT THE LADIES ARE FABULOUS.

Date: 2010-05-02 07:15 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] robotjen.livejournal.com
I AGREE THAT THE LADIES ARE THE BEST PART. The plot is pretty generic, but I really enjoy it for what it is. When it's good it's fantastic, and when it's bad it's just "meh." The only episodes I truly hate are the clips shows they insist on having every season.

I'm afraid I've read/seen far, far too much "boy with destiny" fantasy to be able to care about the plot itself. Sad but true. I prefer campy TV when it realizes the plot is generic and so just kinda ignores it. (And yet, I prefer plot in my fiction?)

KAHLAN AND RICHARD LOVE EACH OTHER. BUT SHE'S A "CONFESSOR" WHICH MEANS THAT IF SHE HAS SEX WITH SOMEONE SHE WILL "CONFESS THEM"--MEANING SHE TAKES AWAY THEIR FREE WILL AND THEY'RE SLAVES TO HER WHIM. I guess it's not forbidden, entirely, but they can never consummate their love. (Though, there are so many magical ways in which they could, that have come up on the show, that at this point it's just funny that they haven't tried harder to figure out their problem. I guess they have other things to worry about. LIKE SAVING THE WORLD.) Also, there are horses. And swords.

From: [identity profile] lesbiassparrow.livejournal.com
This is certainly original. But tho' a problem for him, possibly quite entertaining for her, surely? Does it last forever or is there a time limit to the enslavement? AND - CRITICALLY - WILL IT ALSO AFFECT THE HORSES BY SOME SORT OF MAGIC OSMOSIS?

Date: 2010-05-02 08:17 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] robotjen.livejournal.com
He'll be forever enslaved, which is why they can't do it ever! He's got, like, a world-saving mission and it's her job to help him out, because she's awesome. Actually, both of the women who are in his merry band (as his sworn enemy/brother likes to call it)--they're there to protect him, mostly--are much more awesome than he is.

OH AND THE HORSES ARE IMMUNE? IDK IF THEY ARE, BUT THAT IS MY GUESS SINCE I AM PRETTY SURE SHE WOULDN'T HAVE SEX WITH THEM.

She and the horses and their horse faced old guy with white hair friend and teacher are awesome. But boy is boring, boring, boring and did I mention boring? I guess the writers thought a bit of unrequited lust would make the show more interesting but in that case, they should have chosen a better actor. Watching him is like watching paint dry - flat, dull, no effect and did I mention boring?

Have you watched any of season 2? Their Mord'Sith companion, Cara, is made of total win! But, yeah, Richard is painfully boring.

I've watched it when I remember it's on so I am sure that I have the time line hopeless entangled. But, so far, I like all (or most) all the women characters but I'm not sure which one is Cara - probably another awesome woman.
Richard - awesomely bad. Plus, not sexy.
