This took longer than I thought, so here's [livejournal.com profile] cryptile's and [livejournal.com profile] annous' for the moment.

Cornelia, mother of the Gracchi. After Tiberius got killed by minions of the Senate, sent stern letters to Gaius. After he died retired to outside Rome, thumbed her nose at the many enemies of her family, held great parties and was woed by one of the Ptolemys

Clodia, (Lesbia), purported lover of Catullus and Marcus Caelius Rufus, sister of Clodius one of Caesar’s more notorious henchmen. One of the richest women in Rome and owner of three houses on the Palatine, she was of uber-aristocratic stock, single-minded and also, if our sources are correct, had a very naughty life, thus perfect for the role.

Terentia, Cicero’s first wife. Much richer than Cicero, stood by him through his exile and worked hard to get him back. Clever – rumoured to be the person who gave him the spine to go ahead with moving against Catiline. Ruthless, clever, politically savvy: who could ask for anything more?

Hortensia, the daughter of the famous orator Hortensius. When the triumvirs (Antony, Octavian, and Lepidus) taxed wealthy women, she led a committee to Fulvia, Antony’s wife, who threw them out of the house. She then went to the forum and gave a stirring speech – so stirring that when the triumvirs tried to have her and the other women thrown out of the forum, the crowd wouldn’t let them.

Fulvia, Antony’s (second?) wife. First historical woman to be on Roman coins, granddaughter of Cornelia, mother of the Gracchi, fought on Antony’s behalf not only with her (considerable) wealth, but also with an army in Italy.

(Annous you will recognize some of these from you – but they really are heartwrenchers so I am using them)
The ending of Devdas, with Devdas lying dying outside the house of his childhood love Paro, while Paro rushes to get to him – but cannot as the doors of her house slam shut on her. And then the kicker: the voiceover which goes ‘shall we ever see the days of our childhood again?’ as I sit weeping at the angst.

Omkara: Omkara telling Langda that they are both damned in this life for what they’ve done, and later the shot of him lying dead below the swing where Dolly’s is lying and it's all so grim, because not only is Omkara destroyed, but Langda doesn't even get the frisson of pleasure in seeing him destroyed that he thought he would.

Kal Ho na Ho: not the death scene (though that is sad) but Naina confronting Aman when she finds out he is dying, and asking him why he loves her and him insisting he doesn’t love her.

Veer-Zara:...er a lot of it after the intermission. But the moments when Veer is finally beginning to tell the middle parts of his narrative to his lawyer and she is just gripped by it and we know it’s all going to end so badly and we are still in the middle of the love story and I am dreading how it will all end.

Rang de Basanti: the final moments, with the men inside the radio station, DJ (Aamir) and his pal just joking as they wait for the police to burst in and shoot them, DJ telling his friend that he loves Alice, her listening to all of this happening, then the shots and their death – and all she and the other women in the story can do is stand helplessly by and hear it all happen. And then you have the shot of the friends all running in a happier time while this cheery song plays...

And for [livejournal.com profile] dangermousie:

1. Dev and Maya in the hotel room in KANK. The guilt, the hesitation, the lighting, and then SRK takes his shirt off. What more could you want?

2. Another KANK scene: the scene at the ballet, where Dev is looking at Maya and Rishi and Rishi is kissing Maya while there is this frantic ballet in the background. Guh. There is something about the voyeurism there that I thought made this one rather twistedly hot

3. Parineeta: after the do it yourself wedding, the bedroom scene between Shekhar and Lolita, while the ‘real’ wedding happens elsewhere.

4. Veer-Zaara: where Veer turns up at the shrine (?), and Zaara sees him in the rain and runs towards him. There’s something about the way that SRK and Preity Zinta look at each other at that point that is incredibly...I don’t know...but I do know that they do more with that one look than most people do on screen by taking off all their clothes.

5. Bunty aur Babli: the moments right before they sing ‘Chup Chupke.’ Not only are they excellent conartists, they also burn the screen right up at that point.

ETA: Subtitle hell: I am watching an official copy of 'Heaven's Wedding Gown' which manages the feat of having subtitles for English that are a) completely different from what is being said in the English and b) be completely incomprehensible. I should have not expected much given that the back of the box has sentences like this 'Two people simlutaneously had a liking for a small wooden horse in an individual artistic shop quarrelling, finally under shop owner's tactitly consenting to.' Eh?

ETA 2: I am no longer watching 'Heaven's Wedding Gown' as it was incomprehensible and also rather cheap looking. I have transferred over 'Long Vacation' which also looks a bit cheap (filming on video tape is never a good idea) but has much better acting. Though there is also an unnerving bad English pop sound track in the first episode which is a bit off-putting.
