So far Lost is managing to make me uncomfortable. Really uncomfortable. Seeing people at such a huge disadvantage as Jack, Kate, and Sawyer is really unnerving.

Also from [livejournal.com profile] nostalgia_lj (via [livejournal.com profile] jonquil) this article which reeks of middle class and academic smugness and gittery.

A quote:
She knows that posh people don't live on council estates, so I can't be that posh, and yet I'm obviously not common. From my point of view, trying to make sense of what kind of person I am becoming in Bermondsey, I begin to understand that social-class position is the outcome of an inextricable relationship between money and manners. Ways of getting money and ways of being in the world are inseparable, and it is this that defines what it means to be a particular kind of British person. (The full piece can be found here: a woman who makes me despair of academics)

Doesn't this make you want to punch her? And the article just get worse as you read it (I love her startling realisation after living there for 13 years that there are different types of common people. Why yes, it took her 13 years to work this one out). Every single word just drips with arrogance and privilege and a desire to always be apart from these people because quite clearly they are there for here to point to like some odd exhibition in a museum of mankind. I lived somewhere that was so remote in Ireland we attracted anthropologists and all I can say is that I don't understand how more of them don't get attacked by people they observe. Also people tell them complete lies just to get rid of them which they do not seem to pick up at all.

And in personal news, currently work is insane and not showing any signs of getting any better.
