Only a few of you on flist know of the wonders of Ros na Rún, an Irish language soap opera which runs on TnaG. And apparently according to this excellent article on a PBS station in Philadelphia. Go Philly!

Now if you like skullduggery, evil pub owners (Tadhg, the monstrous owner of the local pub is wonder to behold in backstabbing action), lovelorn priests, mercy killings, sort of incestuous love, brewing of illegal liquors, and other fine things then this is the show for you! It is filmed in the west of Ireland, in Spiddal (quite a lovely place! Though not as lovely as northern Donegal,* of course).

Here's the link to the wikipedia entry, which also gives you a run down on some of the more thrilling plots. It is subtitled and is available in streaming video from TnaG, the Irish language TV station.

Some pictures behind the cut. They're just headshots because it's hard to get images of the show. Plus one promo )

*In the interests of full disclosure, northern Donegal is where I grew up and I may be biased a wee bit.

Sadly cannot watch Irish language telly with Firefox as plugin to watch their streaming video has issues with loading. This means no Ros na Run for me for a bit until I sort out issues. How will I live without my Irish soap opera? You know, even though it does not feature pretty people very much I still love this show and its mad plots and evil bar owners. In the small category of Irish soaps it wins out totally and almost eradicates the horror of Fair City, which is pretty impressive. (Only people who have ever sat through even 10 minutes of Fair City* will know what I mean.)

Do you know how sad it makes me that I am the only person on livejournal to list Ros na Run as an interest? I would try and lure you in with youtube videos but there aren't any.

* I am pretty sure this wins out in the worst show ever category.

I have recently got a bit obsessed with the Irish language soap opera Ros na Run. It is not actually good or anything but I still cannot stop watching it (think Coronation Street on a very low budget). It's set in the West of Ireland (Spiddeal, I think; anyway, near Galway) and has devious fathers who just got out of jail, CD pirates, wife-beaters, a man who has just been arrested for killing his wife in a mercy killing, a mad bride-to-be, and a love-lorn priest. Though why cannot I not find the episode where the priest declares his love for one of his parishoners? TnaG, why is it not on your web site? Do you want to torment me with never seeing their illicit love?

I am sad that I AM THE ONLY PERSON ON LIVEJOURNAL WHO LISTS ROS NA RUN AS ONE OF THEIR INTERESTS.

Should anyone feel compelled to watch it (or just to hear what Irish sounds like): you can go here: http://www.tg4.ie/Webt/webt.htm

Click on web tv and then pick 'drama' at the side. Go on, go on, go on.....

Hey, at least it's better than that scifi programme they made a while back. That was a bit disturbingly horrible, with special effects worse than Who in its leaner years.
