I've been slowly catching up on the Korean version. Hmmmn. I'm not sure: some things I quite like about it - they've certainly got the best Domyouji incarnation (and he can do intimidating plus besotted plus quite bonkers which is a hard combo) but... I really find the more I watch the less I like the girl playing Jandi. Admittedly, she is struggling against the world's most unflattering bowl hair cut, a hair cut no human being should be forced to wear, but, still, that can't be what's impeding her acting. The Japanese version's Makino had a spark that appealed as much as how very cute the actress was, Barbie Hsu as Shan Cai in Meteor Garden was both charismatic and had a will of iron that never wavered, but Jandi is just okay. She's better when they're not making the actress mug for the camera but she still comes across as flat a lot of the time.

I'm pretty indifferent towards her, too. She isn't horrible, but I find her really forced most of the time. Joon Pyo on the other hand is pretty much perfect in the DYJ role.

Joon Pyo is great, but Jandi really needs to be a lot better for it to work really. I wish they'd stop doing the cutesy stuff with her because clearly it's not the actress' forte and it comes across as really fake and unnatural for her.

ETA: plus they seem to have her spend about 80% of her time shrieking.

I quite agree with you on both occasions.Lee Min Ho is such an awesome actor! Jan Di - I can't figure her out somehow, she lacks personality a bit for me.

I think she's a lot better at angst than comedy and they should really just cut any scenes where they have her mugging - in this context the actress is just not very good at it (I haven't seen her in anything else, so I can't tell if it's a director thing or the actress). But the big problem is that she's never above okay and *never* has much charisma. I'm puzzled a bit by the casting to be honest; I never got into this before the show started because they were all unknown quantities to me, but if they were going to cast someone clearly older than the rest, they had a huge field to pick from for such a high profile role. I wonder why they went for her?
