Rome!

This would totally have been a much better hour of TV if they hadn't had the nekkid women. And I'm not sticking that behind a spoiler cut because this is HBO and HBO always has the naked women and I can't believe that's a spoiler to anyone. The sex scenes were really kind of rubbish and poorly thought out, though the rest was fun. And hooray for creepy Octavian!

ETA: Er..I do totally have deep and meaningful thoughts about this show and am not all shallow and going 'oooh doesn't Rome look nice' but I can't seem to forumulate them at the moment.

I didn't mind the nekkid women at all, but I'd like to request an equal number of attractive nekkid men. Just to be fair.

They definitely needed more naked men. That's not spoilery either, just a fact.

Yeah, the naked backside of a Gaulish cheiftain was certainly not adequate compensation for the female nudity. And it wasn't the nudity really, just the way those scenes felt shoe-horned into the show because they are showing Ye Olde Rome and felt that they need to show the (poorly lit) carnal lusts of Roman maidens.

And that should be matrons, not maidens because everyone knows maidens can't have sex and be maidens still...

You know what bothered me more than the female nudity? The fact that in ancient Rome, apparently they all had neatly trimmed bikini waxes. Because, really? I don't think so.

I do know what you mean about not being able to formulate coherent thoughts - I think I need to see a few more episodes before I get into any kind of analysis. But I loved Atia (mostly because I really like Polly Walker), and I liked her son as well. Felt bad for her daughter.

They did have mad amounts of depilitaries and cosmetics though...but I think that they were probably more for the tarts than the matrons and I'm not sure how neat they could be (and I bet they were more likely to be horribly painful than anything). I'm thinking that they're going to go the I, Claudius route and have the matrons be mad sex-mad tarts so doubtless they'd think it's worth the pain and effort?

And if it's going to be naked women hour, then I want naked (attractive) men hour as well.

Indeed. I vote for naked James Purefoy next week.

We totally need the lupercalia because then we'd have tons of naked men. We better get it too, because that's when a nearly naked Antony offers the crown to Caesar and I feel that is surely the most pivotal scene in all of Roman history.

I hope it is not a spoiler to say that Marc Anthony is portrayed as quite the young man about town - ahem! (I saw the second episode also during the premiere I went to...)

Now that's the kind spoiler I like, if spoiler it is. Now I'm really looking forward to next Sunday! It'll almost make up for the lack of Sci Fi Friday.

I'll join you in the spoiler liking. Not that I am watching Rome for anything other than highly cultured motives. No interest at all in nekkid men, nope, not me.
