Remembrance of the Daleks. Now with Added 10 spoilers
So I watched this and there...was something.
I'll admit it I sometimes have issues with McCoy. Really nothing to do with him, just that I loved Six (sshh, I am not entirely sane about that) and no one else does. And most people think McCoy is a vast improvement on him and that breaks my wee heart especially seeing as he replaced my doctor. And it always seemed a bit unfair that his replacement was so much more popular.
However, I will admit that Seven is a fine Doctor. He really is. And given what rubbish McCoy was handed in terms of scripts and special effects that is pretty amazing. I am fairly tolerant of Who terrible special effects and cheesiness and people struggling through this, but I'd forgotten that they'd stiffed Seven quite so badly. Honestly, the Daleks One got look better than these ones they're tossing on the screen for this episode. It is quite clear that they would dissolve in any rain. I think I saw feet.
Also the writing? Plus some of the acting (especially the sergant and the 'evil' child)? Well, it is also pretty horrible, and by horrible I mean it dissolved my brain. And was only magnified by the incidental music which was clearly created by synthesizer wielding monkeys who were on an off day.
Also, um, I wish Sophie Aldred was a wee bit better at the whole acting thing. She's not awful or anything, but there is quite a bit of bellowing at the camera. Though I can't really blame her, because that seems to have been the directions that most of the actors got.
ETA: In conclusion I have Who pain. Much Who pain. Also partner kept giggling through this which is always traumatizing.
ETA 2: On mature reflection I think this is the worst episode of Who I have ever seen. Including the one where Three takes a shower and scars us all.
Girl in the Fireplace stuff
I guess I might have found this episode more moving if the woman who played Mde. Pompadour had been a bit more...I don't know, emotive? Or something. She's not a terribly good actress is she? Not awful, just not very charismatic, which she really needed to be to get this to work totally. But she was very pretty and had great posture. Also, I suspect I would have gone for the story more if perhaps Pompadour had been switched for Nell Gwyn in the mistresses of kings stakes. I am not sure what it is, but it is awfully hard for me to get worked up over anyone taking out the aristocracy, even very pretty ones who are necessary for the timeline and who thus must not be killed by clockwork monsters.
Though it was sad to think of her standing there waiting for the Doctor to return. Oh well, I am sure she took it out on the servants. Or the king. So that's alright, then. Though obviously the Doctor has only Rose, Mickey and the Tardis to take it out on, so he's probably feeling a bit low.
I am rather hoping for a wee bit less emo Doctor over the next few episodes. Not that I don't appreciate the Doctor's pain as an aesthetic entity, but they might want to lay off it for a bit.
But not a terrible episode, though I have to say that Sarah Jane totally owned the French lady in terms of gripping my soul. But it would have been amusing to have a French aristocrat trying to deal with the Tardis as a companion, what with the lack of servants, courtiers, etc.
And because I can't sleep and am a wee bit grumpy: if anyone had ever written that last letter 'my looove, etc.' in a fanfic they would be roasted alive. But I sort of forgive it because the 18th century was keen on that sort of thing.
ETA: Also the BBC is clearly punishing me for making fun of Who 'special' effects by making me unable to sleep. Curse you, long reach of the BBC.
