Because all the cool kids are doing it

My very deep School Reunion Review

I wasn't enjoying this quite so much until the Sarah Jane/Rose giggling scene, because seeing Sarah Jane sad made me sad. Now I want to see Sarah Jane and Rose have their own series where they visit various Doctors and mock them. Yes. This would be good. And they would have very cute robot dogs and make great cups of tea and sit in their garden and do excellent time lord impressions.

I always imagined that the companions outgrew the Doctor as much as he moved on from them. I really never though of Sarah Jane as sitting at home pining for the Doctor to return. And I am totally fanwanking that one as Sarah Jane really having a great old time and suddenly wanting to comfort the emo time lord and assuring him that he was the one, when in fact there had been many, many others. ETA: I would pay good money for someone to write that fic. Especially if there was a bit where she was amused by how easy it was to fool time lords about that sort of thing.

Also I liked the idea that the slacker kid (you know, the one that screws up all of their scores totally and whom the Blairites probably despair about) is the one who saves the school. And he was then celebrated for blowing up the school. Because you should be celebrated for doing this. And I still remember Eileen O'Brien who got our chemistry lab burned to a shell as a hero, and will to my dying day. God bless you, no matter where you are, because that is my absolute best memory of all my education.

I didn't see this so much as about smacking Rose down (though I know if you don't like her you will probably see it this way) as about, well, growing up. You know, that painful bit where you realise the universe isn't really fair and never will be. And that despite that, there are other things to have fun with. And in the end you bounce back.

And my new OTP: Sarah Jane/Rose 4Eva. Screw the Doctor (and maybe they both did, are doing, will)! Their love is eternal!

OK, now you have to tell the story about how Eileen O'Brien burned down the chem lab!

[identity profile] lesbiassparrow.livejournal.com 2006-04-29 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I do not quite know how it happened (and she would never tell). One moment she was tinkering around with something and then suddenly there were flames licking along the side of the wall, and a nun shreiking and fire alarms and it was great. And afterwards she would have a secret smile on her face about it, and they could never expel her because nothing could be proven despite all the times she was called to see the principal.

I just really hope the world was kind to her because SHE BURNED DOWN OUR LAB.

Shrieking nuns! Secret smiles!

I'd like to buy Eileen O'Brien a drink.

You know, every so often I think about her and I always wish I would run into her randomly somewhere and drag her into a bar and we would drink and I would find out what happened and I would be properly able to thank her.

She was clearly destined for great things.

I hope that somewhere Eileen is very very happy.

I'm all for Sarah was playing up how much she missed the Doctor to make him feel the GUILT that he clearly deserved to feel for dumping her in Aberdeen, yes.

[identity profile] lesbiassparrow.livejournal.com 2006-04-30 07:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! He needs to feel the guilt! Instead of being 'oh woes is me for everyone gets old on me! feel my pain!' when quite clearly he tosses them off the Tardis and never gives them a bus ticket home.

And never fucking calls. Not once.

How much did I love Sarah Jane saying, (paraphrase) "No, you won't ever get back to me again, and this time I deserve a real goodbye."

[identity profile] lesbiassparrow.livejournal.com 2006-04-30 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
And never fucking calls. Not once.

Even though he has a phone on the Tardis and is probably not actually paying any phone bills for it. And both this Doctor and Nine are actually having to face up to some of their consequences of running off with young people from earth and then chucking them out when they grow up and are not longer all cute and puppy like.

I was running a count in my head. Adric, Katarina, and a couple of others: dead. Romana and Susan (assuming she is Gallifreyan), assumed dead. Leela, last seen on Gallifrey, probably dead.

In my little world, Liz got the Nobel Prize and never thinks of the Doctor at all.

I'm with you on the Sarah Jane/Rose thing; I do. not. write. fic. anymore. (until my dissertation is done at least) and I'm having a very difficult time not letting my mind follow that whole "find me" thing.

One of the very first fics I ever wrote (it was in a zine and luckily is probably lost for all time) was Five coming back to find Sarah Jane and say goodbye properly. As I recall, she had a husband who looked like a handsomer version of Four. I was Very Young at the time. But I always assumed she would move on.

[identity profile] lesbiassparrow.livejournal.com 2006-04-30 07:49 am (UTC)(link)
Well, when the dissertation is done...! Because there needs to be Sarah Jane/Rose fic. And fic where Sarah Jane is all okay with how things turned out, despite being dumped in Aberdeen and given a dodgy robot dog.

[identity profile] chelseagirl47.livejournal.com 2006-04-30 11:13 am (UTC)(link)
I can see it in so many directions: femmeslash definitely, but also platonically where Sarah Jane mentors Rose (who clearly needs a professional direction), and I also keep thinking about the "somebody else's grandchildren" and ways that might play out.

Also, I'm a bad, bad person, but I have this irresistible mental image of Rose bringing Sarah Jane home to meet her mum. "But, Rose, she's older than I am," "Yeah, mum, but about 850 years younger than the Doctor."

[identity profile] lesbiassparrow.livejournal.com 2006-04-30 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
It is something that is ripe for fic, isn't it? And one where they don't spend all their time pining over the doctor, but get to have some fun.

And I very much want to read that Jackie meets SJ scene.

[identity profile] chelseagirl47.livejournal.com 2006-04-30 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Former companions on the town; "Doctor, who's that?" Hmmm.

As for SJ meets J, *that* think I can manage. :-)

I have a whole essay I need to write about "MY Sarah Jane!"

Because he was never, in his own mind, HER Doctor. He possessed her, but not the other way around, which is why she was so devastated by his leaving. He wanted to be her world, but he didn't want to deal with the consequences.

And, oh, but he is going to do that to Rose, assuming she doesn't find a reason to leave on her own.

Bring the angst!

[identity profile] lesbiassparrow.livejournal.com 2006-05-01 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Rose is going to run off and have Sarah Jane's babies. And she will bring her own robot dog and K-9 can finally have some actioncompany.
