A lesson to you all + Tom Jones
So today is day 6 of my quitting smoking. So far I have not fallen by the wayside, but I have managed to acquire a hacking cough which makes me sound like an ill-mannered consumptive and a very sort throat. It seems very unfair that I have give up the source of so much pleasure and ill-health only to be rewarded by this! This is probably some very valuable sort of lesson for everyone, but I am not sure what sort.
I am most impressed that I did not even smoke last night while at Tom Jones concert despite being with friend who did. Maybe it was the amazingness of the concert that did it, as Tom Jones was great. There was some sort of band to open but I can't remember who they were as I wasn't really there for them. I was there for Tom and his glorious twizzling body. Mind you, he has slowed down a fair bit (the trousers they are not so tight) and he did not sing 'Sexbomb' which made me sad. Instead we got Prince song as an encore. And no one threw their knickers. I would have brought some to chuck but sadly we were too far away and I would have hit some innocent bystander on the head with me undies.
And now a tiny snippet about the finale of Doctor Who Season 2

My sister had taped this so we saw it when we came back from Greece. I watched it with her, another person and my mum. Both my sister and the other person are not very big fans of Tennant as the Doctor, which made it interesting as I quite like him (not as much as my unholy love for Eccleston, but I think he's good when he's not doing the shouty stuff) .
However, my mum thinks it's been all downhill for Who since they got rid of Pertwee so she disapproves of all other doctors on principle; most of her comments about the show go 'It's not been the same since they got rid of the nice white-haired man with the car'. (And no, she was not even won over by Tom Baker).
Anyway, it's interesting watching with other people who are casual fans of the show and who don't particularly care for the current doctor.* Despite that, I think we all thought it was a good tragic send-off and we were all glad to have the age-old question of who would win when Daleks faced off with Cybermen. I would have thought the cybermen would have put up a better show, but there you go.
At the end my mother added the helpful comment that Pertwee would probably have saved Rose from an alternate universe and that Doctor Who has gone sadly downhill. The rest of us just sat around gaping. And I mourned the fact that I now owe
nostalgia_lj 5 pounds as they didn't kill Rose.
*There was a certain amount of comments about probably not bothering to tune as there's no more Billie Piper, but I suspect that will only occur if the next companion is rubbish on a Mel level.
And for the next companion, I sort of hope they avoid the temptation to make her this extraordinary person - such as an action hero or genius or something of that ilk. I think that's a minority opinion, but I think the Doctor works best with an everyman competent companion. But I do worry that they'll feel they have to distinguish her so much from Rose in terms of background they'll go overboard.

And now I'm thinking of Rose meeting the Third Doctor. *grin*

I would think Rose would love the Third Doctor. He has capey coats and it strangely elegant.

Rose would be a bit put off by him being old... but he has a superfast car and Venusian Aikido skillz. And that would convince her that he was the Doctor, because old people in capes don't go around pretending they know martial arts and then kicking the arses of people.
Unless maybe they're superhuman old people. Hmm.
