Insomnia: she stalks my life

It was FOUR AM before I went to sleep last night. This seems wrong! Thankfully I don't have to get up too early but still that's crazy hours!

But!

1. I finished several books amongst whom was the marvelleous To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis. Someone on my flist recommended this to me and all I can say is thank you. It's part time travel adventure, part homage to horrendous Victorian art, and also to the Edwardian era and the world of Jerome K. Jerome. Even at 3 in the morning as I moped about getting no sleep and looking like death's unattractive relative when I rose, it still entertained.

2. I finished season 1 of The Young Riders in which clichés were shamelessly used at about the rate of four a minute. We're up to people making comments about the Civil War which is a'coming folks and will force BROTHER TO FIGHT AGAINST BROTHER and FREEDOMS TO BE CURTAILED and INNOCENCE LOST and who knows what else.

3. Still haven't finished The Little Fairy. This weekend its hour will come. Or, rather, hours. Plus I also have the first disc of Wolf's Rain. I have never really watched anime before so I hope that's a good starter one. If I am really traumatized I plan on blaming [livejournal.com profile] meganbmoore

4. I also finished two more Blood Ties books. Including the one where Henry gets locked in a box by Zombies. I enjoyed him being generally useless in that one. Though it still didn't dent his self-confidence any. I think what is most annoying is that he thinks about himself in capitals: standard Henry reflection seems to go like 'I am Vampire. Nightwalker. Prince. Leader of Men. ETC.'

5. I have finished teaching and am getting excited about going home for Christmas. Yay! For Christmas in Ireland. Let's hope this year my sister and I don't find any more mad stray dogs who proceed to fall in the Liffey.

To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis

EEEEEEE! I LOVE that book! Droll and science fiction-y and historical and YAY!

So good; the Bishop's Bird Stump would be the sort of thing you'd get stuck with searching for as a time agent. I kept trying to visualize what exactly that horror looked like but my brain kept getting stuck on the Slaughter of the Innocents.

I can't believe I've never read anything by her before - I plan on buying a ton before I fly home for the plane trip.

I hope #1 was me, because I feel like I recommend it all the time and people are sick of hearing about it. It is very high on the list of my favorite novels ever. I bet you'll like her other books too.

[identity profile] lesbiassparrow.livejournal.com 2007-12-06 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
Well, you should keep recommending it because I haven't enjoyed something so much for ages. It's one of those books you wish you could be starting for the first time all over again.

'I am Vampire. Nightwalker. Prince. Leader of Men. ETC.'

Can't really blame the zombies for locking him in a box.

It made me rather love the walking dead. Clearly they have taste.

I shall accept any blame for trauma. But remember, one of anime's shining moments of emo manpain occurs midway through.

Will my head explode if I watch it and the end of TLF in quick succession?

[identity profile] meganbmoore.livejournal.com 2007-12-06 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
nope. but i demand to be here for both.

[identity profile] lesbiassparrow.livejournal.com 2007-12-06 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
I will demand you are there for emotional support.

and there are so very, very many good parts that i left out...Darcia's manpain is aweinspiring. There's another post devoted to him in the wolf's rain tag.

Another book to add to my long list, I see. It sounds unique and intriguing, but really, as if I don't already have enough to read. *g*

Ireland sounds wonderful, though I know nothing of the mad dog and the Liffey.

As for insomnia, explain to me please why I'm wide awake at 1:00 AM when I have to get up at 6:00 and fly away? I only just finished packing. Gaaah.

[identity profile] lesbiassparrow.livejournal.com 2007-12-06 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
It really was a treat to read. So much fun.

And all I learned from the mad dog incident is that a wet dog will get instant sympathy from strangers, while the damp people who had to pull him out and who don't have fur coats to keep them warm as they shiver get no sympathy at all

And wakefulness at 1 am is typical when you have a 6 am wake up time followed by having to be semi-aware as you go through airport security.

Oh, Young Riders. Lou/Jimmy 4evah!

[identity profile] lesbiassparrow.livejournal.com 2007-12-06 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
The Kid must die! So Lou and Jimmy can have their excitingly messed up love!

Oh, Young Riders, why do you cheat me of this?

[identity profile] caerbannog.livejournal.com 2007-12-06 08:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yay, I'm glad to hear that you liked To Say Nothing of the Dog! I love that book so much. Now there is a prequel of sorts called Doomsday Book that's set in the same college and time travel program. However, it's completely different in tone. Be prepared for weeping.

[identity profile] lesbiassparrow.livejournal.com 2007-12-07 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
Who does the weeping? Is it - dare I ask - people with MANPAIN? Because that would be excellent.

[identity profile] caerbannog.livejournal.com 2007-12-07 09:21 am (UTC)(link)
Generally speaking, the reader will, if they have a soul. It's horribly sad. Unfortunately, it's not of the MANPAIN variety. More like bubonicplaguepain.

standard Henry reflection seems to go like 'I am Vampire. Nightwalker. Prince. Leader of Men. ETC.'

I love that about him. I really do. I find myself thinking it for him during the show.

When the Tudors raised a bastard prince they certainly managed to infuse him with self-confidence. It is impressive, really, how long that conditioning lasted.
