I'll Sleep when I'm Dead
Jul. 14th, 2005 11:17 amI'll admit I'm not hugely fond of Clive Owen so I probably should have known better than to rent this film, especially as the guy who directed also directed Croupier, a film I disliked intensely. But he also directed Get Carter, which I really, really like so I thought it was worth the risk - and besides it had Charlotte Rampling whom I love. But (in my humble opinion) I'll Sleep when I'm Dead is one of the more pointless British gangster films that I've ever seen and I want to rant about wasting my time on it. Perhaps I just feel stupid because I should have known better.
So much is never explained: why the hell did Clive Owen become a lumberjack in the first place? What was the motivation for his brother being raped - the explanation was so weak and didn't actually mesh with the whole gangster getting revenge vibe that they tried to give the scene in the first place. Why bring up the drugs plot only to forget about it? Who was the guy dressed up in women's clothing who got dropped off in the body bag at head gangster's house? What the hell was the ending? And why would you waste Charlotte Rampling in that role - her sodding big scene was one about Owen's character not feeling he deserved to be loved; she deserved more than that. Aarrgh! I hate films that waste my time especially when I should be doing something else.
