My Lovely Kim Sam-soon

This will, I promise, be the end of my moaning about this kdrama. The strange thing is that I can see that this has a lot of good bits and if I did not by now loathe the hero so much (not to mention Hee-jin, the Secondary Female Lead) I think I would find it a lot better at the end. As it is, I just think he's a complete jerk and completely self-absorbed. And I still want him eaten by bears. Big, angry bears.

But most of all I hate Hee-jin. I especially hated it when we got the big reveal that her current illness was...anorexia. Look, I don't mean to say that that's not a serious illness but this being used to rouse up my sympathy for her tragic circumstances when she looks perfectly healthy and seems to be doing alright for herself what with Daniel Henney hanging around her all the time like a lost puppy who has just smelt bacon. Also, I don't think that much of the actress. She's only (IMO) got three facial expressions - all of which I am supposed to find endearing - and I already got bored of them in 'What Planet Are You From.' And I know dorama science is not exactly science of this world* but do they normally do cat scans and head x-rays when they bring you into a hospital with anorexia? It seems a bit of overkill to me and I would think they'd be worried about other bits of your body first.

ETA: I should say that what I do love is Sam-soon's family. Her sister and her mother are quite smashing especially when they are beating people who have done Sam-soon wrong about the head. Sometimes they beat other people too and that is almost as entertaining, though I do like the bits where they hit Sam shik the most. I would probably have liked this show if after episode 7 or so all it had was various members of the Kim family hitting Sam-shik.

* We should never forget that it was a dorama that confidently asserted that a car accident could give you eye cancer years later. Stairway to Heaven, your cracktastic plots will never cease to amaze.

I think she did it just to be contrary. And annoy me. I did like the bit where Sam soon thought about running off with him in one of her fantasies.

Oh, I also thought the completely gay fight in the pool between Daniel Henney and Sam-shik was a particular highlight.

Haha, the pool fight. I love how they keep giving Hyun Bin's characters english-speaking skills. The guy is about as fluent as my new immigrant neighbour.

All that manly wrestling with each other in the pool had me in stitches. It reminded me of the fight between Colin Firth and Hugh Grant in Bridge Jones II.

The English skills thing was as bad as one I saw where I really couldn't work out what the guy was saying in English.

Agreed on Sam Soon's family being awesome, the scene where she imagined her dad talking to her made me quite teary. And it doesn't beat angry bears, but Sam-Shik's own mother is always beating on him too.

Don't forget that amnesia can be cured if you get hit by a car for the second time.

Sam-shik did get whacked a lot which was always satisfying.

I loved Sam Soon's family - especially the way they always came to her rescue and that her sister wasn't all crushed by her wanker first husband but came bouncing right back.

And the mum with the dog was also super cute when she was calling him '50 Million Won' and trying to get him to eat. And the Karaoke!

Maybe it was just me, but I kind of liked that he was an asshole. It just made it more fun to watch them interact.

Normally I don't have such issues with the jerks, but in this one I felt that there were so little consequences for his actions that it bugged me.

I started watching Coffee Prince - I like it but I ran out of episodes! I guess I will have to wait for jdramas to catch up.

I think he's an idiot, but I forgive him, because a part of the character flaw is just that he's young and doesn't get the world like Samsoon does.

It's so very satisfying when they kick Samshik's ass, yes indeed.

I was always delighted by scenes of Samshik abuse. They were my favourite bits. I really liked the one where he rang on the door of Samsoon's door and her mother came to the door and chucked stuff all over him and then tossed out his dog at him. It made me very happy. Sadly she then went and forgave him. *sigh*

So funny, as I had mirror-opposite views: I liked the anorexia girl and Daniel Henney, was largely indifferent to Hyun Bin's character (though liked him occasionally) and loathed SamSoon the way I have never loathed another heroine in a drama before or since.

i watched the drama with WITHS2 subs (which I trust) and Heejin has stomach cancer, hence the excessive scanning. 3 years ago she went to the US for treatment, apparently her cancer is in remission right now hence Daniel Henney follows her back to do regular check up to make sure the cancer doesnt resurface. hence the excessive angst when Samshik finds out why Heejin left. etc. :)

Now I do feel bad about being so mean about the character. My subs did the whole reveal thing as anorexia, which is a terrible disease but didn't really explain all the ANGST.
