This is what goes through my mind during The State of the Union speech

Just how much energy do you think it takes Nancy Pelosi not to roll her eyes every five minutes? And why does Cheney always look like listening to Bush is about as much fun as a prostate exam? Feign some enthusiasm, man! He's your bloody colleague.

Plus, is it the law that you have to stand and applaud every time the president mentions the army? If I were him, I'd just fling random mentions in the middle of other things to make everyone get up when they were planning on looking disapproving.

I am grading and thus having unchallenging material like this is what works very well as background. And I am a bit fascinated by Cheney's expression of distaste for this whole project.

Man, it was history totally being made. OR SOMETHING. Mostly I just watched Cheney looked bored and Pelosi indulge in massive amounts of self-control.

Yes, clapping at any mention of the army is one of the lesser known articles of the Patriot Act. Right after the part where no one points out that the president can't put a sentence together without three (3) people helping him.

God, what wouldn't I give to see that scenario play out. It would be the best State of the Union EVER.

I wonder how much they dread those things? And how many of them are going around saying things like 'I totally feel a flu coming on, man! I hope it's nothing bad' weeks before to prepare the path for their inevitable calling in sick.

And - my favourite bit of the speech is the complete random pans of the audience, who look vaguely like they've just wandered into the most boring party ever but have only just realized it.
