What is it about cell phones in libraries? Why, unless you are a world renowned surgeon, who may be called upon to operate in a moment's notice (which begs the question of why you are in the library in the first place, really) do you need to have the cell phone on as people try to work around you? I particulary hate the people who leave their cell phone on, then answer it with 'oh, I'm in the library, I'll have to walk outside' and then walk out talking happily. Because they obviously know they are doing wrong and still do it. Even worse are the people who take the call, then wander off to the window and have their conversation, like moving five feet makes it okay. Bastards, the lot of them.

My mood was not improved by massive amounts of reading on the sad condition of Greek women in antiquity, which has given me all sorts of useless remedies to fix your wandering womb (you really don't want to know). Living in Athens in the classical period for a woman seems akin to living under the taliban, but without turbans and public stonings. Go, cradle of democracy! Your men were free, and I guess that's all that counts.

This cranky post has been brought to you by the combined efforts of Aristotle, Aeschylus, and Hesiod.

I can sympathize. I awoke this morning at 5:00 am to the neighbor's house alarm. It rang continuously until 9:00 am. After the number of times this has happened the neighborhod would welcome it if they were robbed blind.

They live in Egypt - why they don't have the alarm on a service I'll never know. GRRR...

Not to mention no one in this neighborhood has been robbed EVER that I know of.

I don't charge my cellphone - I find this to be very effective. It cuts down on annoying calls, bad news, strange vibrating and pesky ringing. Once every few months I check the messasges and feel a little guilty when I've missed something important. The feeling passes quickly.

Sorry to hear about bonkers neighbours and their alarm...have you ever thought about creeping over and disconnecting it? :-)

I have a cell phone but I am totally paranoid about switching it off and not having conversations in public places where you are forcing yourself on other people... Actually, rather like you I leave it off sometimes by mistake and then pick it up frantic messages very late. I just don't understand the belief that you are so important that everyone must be forced to listen to your conversation!

I get really annoyed at people who compare the Brehon law system unfavourably with the Roman system, specificially the system of citizenship. Only a small percentage of Romans were citizens, dammit! And none of them were women!

I must admit I know shamefully little about Breton law, but anything is better than the Greeks. Only the Spartans treated their women well really and that was only managed by making slaves of all the Greeks around the. :-( Very depressing.

I can't stand when people have private converstaions on their phones in public. I've heard someone quite recently inviting friends over for a house warming party and loudly gave out their new address and directions to their new house. It wouldn't be surprising if a few random people showed up.

There are some things that text messaging was made for...

I know - it's like they think they have an invisible bubble around them blocking their information. I once had a woman have a *therapy session* beside me. Really personal stuff too, and somehow I was supposed to ignore it!
