Soooo...I didn't like the book and I still can't get over SPARKLY VAMPIRES IN HIGH SCHOOL being the core of the plot, but I have to admit that I will always have admiration for anyone who makes a living writing books.* And then gets a film complete with sparkly vampires made flesh. Sadly, if someone offered me vast sums of money to write dreck about something even more horrifically and inappropriately glittery, I would do so.
As for this as her fantasy, well, I find myself not caring. There are tons of books and characters out there that are clearly people's fantasies made text (James Bond for one, Harriet Vane and Peter Wimsey for another), so even if this isn't a fantasy that I share or even think is very good, I don't actually see it as that bizarre or feel like going on about how OMG ROBERT PATTISON SO HAS HER NUMBER.
*There are some exceptions, but beyond things that are written to be vile and hateful they're few and far between.

Date: 2008-11-20 04:04 pm (UTC)I'd agree; yes, I don't think the books are good and yes, I don't really understand why they are so popular, but all the 'Ha ha!" and pointing every time that someone says anything negative about Meyer as if they had clearly pinpointed some hideous thing about her and the world had finally seen her as an untalented, repellent hag who was ruining fiction FOREVER, just baffles me a bit. It's not as if there's not plenty of terrible books out there, some of which have been EXTREMELY popular but you don't see people ripping into their authors on a personal level.
I assume it's as you say - there's a lot of it 'it
shouldcould have been me because my fantasy is so much better!' It's possible it is (though having seen some people's fantasies exposed on LJ, I'd have to say a hell of a lot of them are much more disturbing and odd than Meyer's) but it's not really a valid reason for ripping into her about her perceived personal failings.
