The end of hockey?

So the season has been cancelled amidst dire warnings of the future. Are we looking at the end of the NHL? Which teams will be lost as a result of this? What players will never play again?

Part of me is glad they finally put an end to the waiting game. The other part is whimpering at the thought of no hockey whatsoever this year.

Is this the way the NHL ends - not with a bang, but a whimper?
