Great Moments in Father Ted
Mar. 28th, 2005 09:50 amFor some reason I'm feeling all nostalgic about this show. It was a comedy on British TV featuring three priests living an island even more horrendous than the one I lived on for a while (I'm still repressing memories): Father Ted, exiled there for something to do with stealing money meant for sending someone to Lourdes; Father Dougal a priest so stupid that Ted asks him if he got into the priesthood by collecting crisp packets; and Father Jack, permanently drunk (sometimes on toilet cleaner which gives him hairy hand syndrome) who only has about three words in his vocabulary. And then there's Mrs. Doyle their housekeeper who lives for making tea.
Great quotes (from various episodes) include:
Go away! I don't want to catch menopause!
Dougal: God, I've heard about those cults Ted. People dressing up in black and saying Our Lord's going to come back and save us all.
Ted: No, Dougal, that's us. That's Catholicism.
Dougal: Oh right.
Ted: What was it [Jack] used to say about the needy? He had a term for them.
Dougal: A shower of bastards.
Ted: So there he is. Risen from the dead. Like that feller.... E.T.
Polly Clarke: My husband. Now there was a man who really was afraid of Virginia Woolf.
Ted: Why? Was she... following him or something?
It's nice to have a nun around. Gives the place a bit of glamour.
