I was thinking how eternally grateful I am that they did not have the internet when I was a child.  (Well, they did but it was called the interweb and only used by scary government agencies in underground bunkers and the like).  Seriously, I know I would have made a spectacle of myself all over the web. And been one of those people who ignored capital letters and wrote fanfic where people had babies and confessed their eternal love in shameful ways.

Also I would surely have picked a user name like 'Adamantlover4eva' and been stuck with it.  Because you are not wise at the age of eight and do not think about years down the line when you will be deeply shamed by such things.  Or even (God, forbid) 'I'mgonnamarrysomeonefromduranduran.' If I was 12 now I'd bet my LJ name would be 'luvsNine.'  Or something equally shaming.

Now, admittedly, lesbiassparrow is not the best of lj names, but, hey, surely referencing Roman literature gets me points? And Latin literature is never going to go out of style.  This is true even if people do think I am called lesbian sparrow and wonder what sort of point I am making.

Occasionally I see online names and I think 'I bet you regret that one at some point' and wonder about the age of the person using it and wonder when they'l; wish they had picked something which dates less.  Because it is such a pain to change over from online names, because even if it is all happening out of reality, you do attach a certain personality to names.  And if you (like me) fear change then someone's name changing takes a lot out of you.   And quite clearly the universe revolves around me so that is very important.

So, er, what is the name you think you would have picked if you were going online as a 10 year old with your current obssessions?  C'mon, be honest! I've admitted I would have referenced Duran Duran in mine. And that's many years worth of mockery right there.

I DID have the internet when I was a kid, I first used it when I was 12. And I DID write scary fanfic and had a slashy nickname. And my History was filled with Sailor Moon webpages.

Hee! I guess as a 12 year old it is more acceptable to write the scary fanfic! And what was the nickname? Or have your buried it forever?

lololollorz! that is the best 90's nickname anyone could ever have.
Sadly, I would have just been Fivecrush. I am wrong in the head.

I've had this name ever since I was 14, and it has stuck to me. Luckily I still like it. People often can't remember how it's spelt so it can help prevent internet stalkers!

I love your name! And the non-spelling thing is handy.

I called myself Queen of Sorrow when I was 13-15 and poked around online. And wrote original fiction with titles like "His Haunted Heart" before I discovered experimental prose and thought I was the cleverest person on earth for refusing capital letters and full stops.

I,um, like Queen of Sorrow!

And I am so glad that all of my horrendous childish writings were in notebooks which could be burned and did not live forever.

Probably D'Artagnan, because there wasn't a lot available in the way of adventurous female role models.

But, yes, I look at people whose fic names are lovesdavidtennant and doctorsmistress and I think, "Boy, are you going to be sorry in five years".

Although it can work out; Tara LJC started out as Lady Johanna Constantine, and when she got tired of it, she just compressed the old name and tacked it on to the new.

I believe I have already commented on the shininess of your name.

D'Artagnan is a pretty good one. I would not have been so wise.

I've seen some of them work too (usually when they get more obscure and it just sounds pretty).

lovesdavidtennant would be a bit problematic if you stopped loving him (as are all of those 'loves/wants/secretlover of x' ones. Though doctorsmistress sounds like a bad (or possibly good) romance novel. Or you have something you are trying to confess.

I have had the same internet username ever since I started, way back in 1997. No-one else ever went for it, and I still have few problems using it as a unique ID. It's an obscure Ann McCaffrey ref, and I only know one person in fandom, who picked up on it.

I suppose when I was ten I was obssesed with The Hobbit , so I probably would have picked something highly cheesy like BilbosBabe or Dragonluver

BilbosBabe

Excellent one. Though at least it's better than 'SauronLovah.' Or something much worse.

I probably would have picked something Duran Duran-related, too. *hangs head in shame*

Past musical taste is often the most embarrassing of all memories. And I cannot believe that Duran Duran is still plugging away. Have they no shame! Let me bury that part of my childhood forever!

Ten, I don't even remember ten. Because I am so old, you see. *g* Um... oh, god, it would have been something about Parker Stevenson, I'm sure of it. Or some really cool reference to Nancy Drew or the Hardy Boys.

If I were ten now, um, maybe something like "violetbaudelaire" . I was never very creative in picking fake names.

Then you are lucky. In my case it would have been really uncool reference to them which I would have been stuck with as...someone who is quite a bit older than 10. I have little enough taste now; at 10 I was even worse and would have shouted it out with hearts and flowers and lots of !!!!!!!!!!!!!. Yes.

When I was ten? Something to do with... Phantom, most probably. Or the Stonelight Trilogy. Or something Diana Wynne Jones, actually. Possibly a pun on pilgrim.

But now? Uh, probably LoM, or Doctor Who related. Knowing me, it'd probably be some Gallifreyan version of my name. *headdesk* Who would have a whole character planned out for her.

I don't mind my current name, except for the bit tacked on the end. As it was supposed to be a fiction journal. Heh. Nice plan. And bad translations of name meanings don't go out of style, either.

But would her eyes have changed colour subtly in the gentle light of day?

Also I have done meme so now you have to.

Her eyes... no. But her hair totally would have. I was very big on hair when I was about ten, not sure why.

Yes, I have yet to do that. *notes this*

I would have been Tony4Maya4eva, since I shipped them like "whoa" when I was 11. (Space 1999). If it'd had been later it would have been Tegan_Jovanka since I had a huge crush on her when I was 14. If I'd been 16 it would have been Simonizmines or something naff like that, since by then I was like a Duranie from hell.

Ha! Another one admits that they would have succumbed to the lure of Duran Duran.
