That is bunnies: the mystery is solved

By dint of going through various subtitle files for Spring Waltz on jdramas and then watching the episode again (episode 8 about 42.50 in, for anyone who cares) I have discovered what the subtitler meant by 'that is bunnies.' And it is (at least according to the amateur subtitles) 'they should become a couple now.' Of course, I have no idea how you go from one to the other except beyond thinking that the subtitler thought of 'love-bunnies' or something of that ilk.

This is, I should point out, the person who translated concealer as 'cake'. That's concealer as in make-up concealer. And told me that Philip apparently searched high and low for his mother's grave so he could confess he missed his dog (another mystery I sorted out with the help of less confused subtitles).

Despite the subtitler's best attempts, however, I finished the series. There was a certain amount of ffing through scenes by the end because of the introduction of young child who was being dragged around by hero's real evil father. I did not approve of this development, though I guess some might find it winsome. Then there was some more angst, Philip looked like he might have a chance with girl only to get his heart kicked around some more, heroine ran off with hero, hero got engaged (again!) to fake first love, mad parents did things, Philip angsted in an incredibly attractive way, then happy ending. Not for Philip, though. And there was very little angsty driving. But crying and saying 'oppa' made an appearance instead.

That, my friends, is bunnies. And, no, I still am not tired of saying that.

I guess now it's either 'My Girl' (which I already own) or 'My Lovely Sam Soon' which I would need to obtain by some means. Admittedly, the latter has Daniel Henney in it and he gets a girl, but I fear the subtitles I might end up with.

I confess to be disappointed at that interpretation of That Is Bunnies! It has no widespread, universal application, whereas "that is bunnies" in the context of: "Well that's just great/dandy" is perfect.

That's my interpretation and I'm sticking to it! :D

I was a little disappointed too. And bemused. I really wish I understood enough to know what the Korean literally said and how you go from that to 'that is bunnies.'

I plan on using the phrase anyway that strikes me as appropriate as clearly the subtitler did too.

Sam Soon is an awesome, funny heroine. But be warned, it is several episodes before Daniel Henney shows up to awe them all with his confusing non-Korean-speaking hawtness.

On subtitlers: when I was visiting my sister in California, she took my mom and I to a Korean video store and not only were the box descriptions terribly translated, one Korean movie had exactly the same plot as that of The Island. Only the cover had a giant Korean cheerleader on it and not Ewan McGregor, so I have no idea what was going on there.

I was in a Chinese video store in Monterey Park and so many of the DVDs had the most, er, interesting descriptions.

I use 'That is bunnies' the way people use "This is bs!!' and I'll never stop.

I think 'that is bunnies' is one of those phrases that we should feel entitled to use however we like. It is not as if the subtitler didn't.

I, alas, have no Daniel Henney icons, but I think of him everytime I use this one.

Sound of Colours got rather angsty so instead of watching 2 episodes a day, I have cut down to one per evening. Now I just indulge in my icon habit.

If you can use megaupload, this site has all the episodes up (or did the last time I checked), and the subtitles seemed decent.

Carrots...bunnies: it all begins to come together! I am scared to think about the thought process behind this piece of translation.

Though I sometimes prefer to think that the subtitler just went mad at some point and started to write completely random things which were full of their own sort of mad wisdom. Who amongst us has not thought 'this is bunnies' at some point.

Ah, in Kim Sam Soon he speaks mostly English, since Ryeo Won, pretty much his only co-star speaks fluent (albeit with a cute Australian accent) English. He's so cute in this one!! Especially when he's talking to Kim Sun Ah.
