Ten Shows You Just Don't Get meme...

I thought it would be fun to do a meme on '10 shows your flist loves but you do not.' They could be shows you've seen or haven't and have no desire to check out.

Note: This is obviously not to denigrate the taste of anyone who loves these.

1. Prison Break. I found the lead extremely unattractive and that is about all that would lure me into watching a show set in a male prison. Clearly I did not have those issues with watching Cell Block H or whatever that Australian show set in a women's prison was called. I really liked that one.

2. Entourage. I just find nothing as uninteresting as Hollywood naval gazing and celebrating completely pointless people who look a bit odd is not much of a lure. I also really find it hard to be interested in or enjoy shows where the entire central cast are men.

3. Sex and the City. I saw 20 minutes of this. Rarely have I hated a group of people so quickly in 20 minutes. I would like them all to spontaneously combust in the film.

4. Friday Night Lights. I am sure it is excellent and so many people love it. But it's got football. And the coach from where I taught last really liked it and that's not a recommendation.

5. The O.C. Dangermousie mentioned wanting to see people with pitchforks at the gates of this community. Yes! Communism could use this as a recruitment video.

6. House. I like Hugh Laurie but I... I know House will always be right! And grouch! And then there'll be a scene where he crosses line and endangers his career!

7. Mad Men. I don't know...I just don't want to watch people being rather horrible in a period which was not exactly a high point for women.

8. Any police procedural show. All of them.

9. Robin Hood. Well, there aren't too many people on my list who liked this, though some struggled manfully though it. Robin looks like a particularly uncharismatic ferret and I ended up rooting for Guy of Gisbourne.

10. What not to Wear. (UK) I don't like reality TV much, but this is the one I loathe the most. I find the point, which is two rather frumpy and horrible women taking people who are often quite comfortable with themselves, belittling them, and then sticking them in clothes which might look better but which they are often patently less comfortable wearing, rather nasty.

Also! I am so thrilled with Doris Lessing's Nobel Prize. I have loved everything I've read of hers and her 'Canopus in Argos' series is hands down, I think, the most brilliant science fiction ever written.

I will never ever watch any of those unless forced...except maybe Robin Hood...

Robin Hood is rather dreadful. I'd just rewatch Robin of Sherwood if I were you.

But Richard Armitage is just so very appealing...and Will Scarlet is my fave RH character usually, and I'm told this version is interesting.

I lasted three episodes because of Richard Armitage and then even I couldn't take even more - and you know the rubbish I watch. This one looks cheap, the writing is dreadful, Robin could lead men across the street to the pub, and Marian is a shrew.

Can you tell I didn't like it? :)

Robin cannot possibly be worse than Kevin Kostner and Marian cannot posibly be worse than Uma Thurman was(there's a reason virtually no one knows of that version...)

Er, I think this makes those two look like masterpieces. I would take Costner over this one any day.

Is it humanly possible to be crueler to some poor young actor than you just were?

He started it! It takes a lot to make me hate Robin Hood but he managed to get me wishing that the bad guys would stick his head on a pike above Nottingham Castle. This is surely not the response the makers were looking for.

I, too, would take Costner, American accent and all, over that ratfaced boy any day, although I just have to keep watching because I love Richard Armitage so much.

In other RH news, the first Robin of Sherwood DVD is on its way to me from Netflix.

I hope you enjoy Robin of Sherwood!

I wish that they'd done different casting in the current Robin Hood. It still wouldn't save the show from terrible writing, horrific female outfits, and cheap, underpopulated sets but it would help. I love Richard Armitage and he's the best thing about the show (it's only redeeming point, IMO) but I feel a Robin Hood where I am rooting for the bad guys has pretty much failed in its purpose. *sigh*

Oh good! I thought I was the only one who found Wentworth M's prettiness scaringly appropriate for a prison movie. And the appeal of House has always been more of the mysteries than the characters.

And yah for another person who can't stand all male casts! In a community where majority of the fandoms are bent on killing of female leads to slash the male lead and pretty but obscure male character A, that's beyond cool!

I think not liking all male casts is why most war movies just bore me to tears. Maybe it's some of desperate need to see a way into the narrative? Which is probably pretty sad when I think about it...

In a community where majority of the fandoms are bent on killing of female leads to slash the male lead and pretty but obscure male character A

I hate it in both slash and het when someone just solves the issue of character A clearly cannonically being in love with Character B by killing character B. Or (even worse) has them say 'I hated character B all along S/he's a bitch/bastard! You, Character C, have been my one true love all along' It just seems like really lazy writing when I've hit it.

The only one I really like on this list is House.

I think I'm just annoyed because I want him to go back and do comedy with Stephen Fry.

10 might be the one that annoys me the most. I find those women horrid and frumpy and apparently dedicated to ruining women's self-confidence. And determined to jam women into things that they are clearly not that comfortable with.

Ah. My vitriol mostly goes to SATC. A bunch of narcissitic ridiculously well-off white women whining about sex and NYC? It's mostly everything I hate, and then I get all mad for feeling anti-feminist for wanting to punch all 4 of the characters in the face. Sigh.

I've only seen about 20 minutes of this but that more or less also encapsulates my feelings.

I love Entourage because it's about guys insulting each other. The art of taking the piss is not really an American thing but Entourage makes it work (latest season is crap, though).

LOL, agreed on House.

I think I have no interest because every time I've seen Hollywood do a film on Hollywood it's always been really uninteresting to me. I've never seen more than 5 minutes of the actual show despite having a few friends who really like it.

Plus, I really do get bored with all male casts even when the show or film is quite good otherwise.

Of the shows on that list, I only watch Prison Break and House. Prison Break had a couple of female characters, but they get killed a lot.

Recently I thought I might check it out and then I heard about the decapitation. That cooled any marginal interest I had.

Yeah, and in the most Women in Refrigerators manner possible (since Sara had been held hostage to force her boyfriend to work with the villains).

Did you watch Torchwood tonight, or is it airing later where you are? (It's a Chibnall ep...)

Not yet - it's on in about a 1/4 of an hour. I am alternately dreading it and looking forward to it.
