Bad Love! The trashiest Kdrama ever

So naturally I love it. In fact, I am thinking of admitting the obvious and calling this journal 'I only watch rubbish. Don't bother recommending things to me unless they are total, absolute crap.'
This is a kdrama replete with angst, dreadful romantic choices, premarital affairs, evil, Giant-haired women who attack shop assistants, and classical music. AND SO MUCH MORE. It also has had the educational effect of informing me that in Korea adultery is an imprisonable offence. Really!
The Characters.
1. Guy who never gets the girl from Full House and Stained Glass. Or Eyebrows, as
calixa likes to call him. He is a man with Ambition. Also a man with a gambling mother and crazy wife. He is doomed to be secondary male and thus lose the girl to the star - and if that wasn't woe enough he is married to evil, crazy, giant-haired daughter of Rich Dad.
2. Our Hero. Played by the guy who was the hero in Stairway to Heaven which still retains its place as the single most cracktastic thing I've ever watched. He is an artist and Rich Dad's illegitimate son. His first love commits suicide and arranges for him to find the body, not unnaturally causing him much delicious angst.
3. Our Heroine. In Jung. So cute and so on her way to success at the start of the show, until she falls for Eyebrows, that is.
4. Evil, Giant-Haired Wife of secondary male, aka Eyebrows (I have pictures below to prove it). Her introductory scene was of her smashing a shop assistant over the head with a glass mirror. She is insane too and of course does not take her medication. So much easier just to beat people up! ETA: We find out in episode 4 that she is so evil she actually hates puppies.
So far this is what has happened IN ONLY TWO EPISODES
1. Hero had heavy makeout session with his First Love in a lift. Then was hit across his face by his father and later First Love kills herself and he found her body. Episode 2 has a deeply emo scene of him flying back with her ashes.
2. Heroine and Eyebrows met up and had sex on the first date! He didn't tell her he was married and she only finds out when she's turned down a chance to go to Paris and play cello. Then he stalks her, as secondary male leads in Korean dramas are wont to do, until she goes back to him and his crazy, evil wife beats her up and damages her hand so she can no longer play the cello. Then she gets flung in jail for adultery, gets pregnant and loses the baby because of Evil Giant-Haired Wife.
3. As if this wasn't enough, when heroine is in hospital with miscarriage and WHILE SHE IS ON THE PHONE WITH THEM the parents are involved in a tragic car accident which leaves them in matching comas. And she has no money to pay for the operation that her father needs! (This is an excellent staple of Kdramas where hospitals are completely heartless and endlessly demand money at inconvenient times.) So she tries to kill herself (for the insurance money I think) but fails. 5 years later she is running a chicken shop in some tiny island and trying to make a home for her now operated on father to come to.
4. Eyebrows is forced to stay in his horrific marriage because his mother in law threatens to throw his mother in jail if he leaves his wife. She would do it too!
5. Gambling mother of Eyebrows ripped him and Rich Dad's company off for thus forcing him to stay in marriage with Crazy Giant Haired Wife
6. Crazy Giant Haired Wife has demanded a child from Eyebrows after ruining his life. And got one! She is clearly completely nuts so I expect her to end up drowning it at some point.
Pictures of the excellent trashiness of the show. Um, I got a bit obsessed with Evil Giant-Haired Wife. When you see you will understand.

Evil Giant-Haired Wife on her way to ruin someone's day. Or possibly drown some puppies and rob orphans. ETA: She does hate puppies! I KNEW SHE WAS SUPER EVIL.

Here she is with some (probably endangered) dead animal attached to her

Another shot of her. There can never be enough. Sadly she gets normal hair in episode 2.

One more picture. Just so you can fully appreciate the hair.

It makes me sad that they change it into this for episode 2. I am hopeful for a return, though.

Mum making the understatement of the century about her crazy daughter.

Her father. Who knows she is crazy but still would break Eyebrows' knees if he ever made her unhappy. He's pretty moral for a man who fathered an illegitimate son

Hero of this little angstfest. And the illegitimate son. I love it when bastard children come back to haunt their fathers.

Eyebrows. This actor will never, ever get the girl. Except, I guess technically he got the girl in this one only to lose her because he was an adulterous bastard.

Gambling mum of Eyebrow. After ripping off her son she has the cheek to accuse him of being ungrateful

Heroine. Not sure what terrifically angsty scene this is. Possibly the one where she is beaten up by Evil Giant Haired Wife of Eyebrows (for the second time!) in the parking lot of police station while Eyebrows sits in the car and watches.

Date: 2008-02-29 07:57 pm (UTC)What I want to know is what possessed Kwon Sang Woo to pick this drama as his first drama after a couple of years. Whyyyyy? I like him, but seriously, even a kdrama star must know there is 'good/successful OTT melodrama' (i.e. Stairway to Heaven) and there is this.

Date: 2008-02-29 08:05 pm (UTC)I am expecting every kdrama cliche to make an appearance. If someone doesn't go blind I will be very disappointed.

Date: 2008-02-29 07:38 pm (UTC)I loved Spring Waltz. It too was full of delicious angst and woe and pretty people suffering horribly as I watched enthralled. My one came with terrible subtitles though (this icon is an example of their thrilling obscurity).

Date: 2008-02-29 08:06 pm (UTC)I like to alternate between watching the library DVDs, which have This Is Bunnies subtitles and watching more (like there could be less, ha) comprehensible fansubbed versions on my computer. I couldn't say which is more entertaining, although neither version has convinced me that the douchey false-identity pianist is preferable to Daniel Henney.

Date: 2008-02-29 08:12 pm (UTC)My subtitles for Spring Waltz once suggested that the characters were going to eat the heroine's aunt which seemed a little extreme even by kdrama standards. It turned out that she was going to make them dinner rather than be it.

PS. I am also friending you if you don't mind! :)

Date: 2008-03-15 02:09 pm (UTC)The Full House guy does get better hair during the show but the first few episodes it's a bit horrifying. I think it's the influence of his evil wife.
Thanks for friending; I've been meaning to add you for ages as we've got so many mutual friends and interests.

Date: 2008-03-16 12:09 pm (UTC)Oh my, I'm glad that I'm not the only one in the entirety of the universe that is like this. Almost everyone I know hates spoilers, and I am like, "Huh, why do you enjoy knowing at the last minute that your hero gets shot in the head? Or die of a brain cancer?" :D I always say that mental preparation is the best way to go, LOL.

That's good to know ^^ And yeah, it is usually the evil wives that have the strongest influence :D
Thanks for friending me back!! :)
