Smallville

So, I'm watching the first episode of the new season of Smallville, as we all know that I love rubbish and someone just reminded me that Smallville is reliably low quality TV with many pretty people. But as I haven't seen it for years, since long before Lois was added, there are all of these new characters who are rather a shock to the system. But mainly I am wondering about Lois: um, is she always this shrill and rather horrid? It might work better if she didn't also seem to have been dropped on her head often as a child. There appears little for her be smug about in the brains department.

ETA: Also! I am lazy, so can someone tell me what Chloe's job is these days?

REMEMBER! Lois is the one Clark ends up with. She cannot be portrayed positively because it must be clear that Clark and Lana's love is pure and true and a beautiful, Special Special Snowflake. (Yeah, they actually portrayed her pretty well the couple seasons with her that I watched...as long as she and Clark weren't showing any interest in each other, and she was supporting Clark/Lana.)

On SV, Chloe gets all of Lois's good qualities.

SV!Lois has always been bitchy, but I like her because she's the only character who is perfectly open about thinking Clark is an idiot. I can deal with her not seeming like Mensa material herself because at least she's not Lana.

Chloe runs the meteour foundation and counsels people. And yes Lois has always been like that, she's actually getting nicer with Clark as she used to be a lot more snide around him

Since she's been introduced to the show the producers have been undecided whether to portray Lois as an ambition-less airhead or a ruthless woman who sleeps her way to the top. Which, of course, has nothing to do with the fact that Chloe, their original character, is the smartest, brightest, most talented reporter in the show even though she doesn't really exist in DC-verse and that role actually belongs to Lois. The trick with Smallville is watching how every female chararacter is compromised to be a foil to Chloe Sue.

ETA: Also! I am lazy, so can someone tell me what Chloe's job is these days?

Her job is Whatever Needs to Be Done. She's super-reporter, super-meteor-freak-with-healing-powers-that-can-destroy-supervillains, super-head of a foundation-that-Lana-founded, and Luthor nemesis all in one perky, blonde package. I'm waiting for the series to end with the big reveal that Chloe is really Wonder Woman.
