Today I did not buy Clash of the Titans because apparently I need a blu-ray player so I can watch what will surely be the completely AWESOME alternate ending where Perseus is hopefully as magnificently dumb as ever and gets whoever was alive at the end of the film killed. I do resent this being pushed into getting a blu-ray player - I am certainly not going through the VHS replacement saga all over again. (BTW are the blu-ray formats different from region to region?). But I did get a second hand copy of GI Joe for $7 which I am currently watching. It's as beautifully and wondrously dreadful as I remember. AND THE MINI NINJAS ARE STILL GREAT. THEY SHOULD BE IN EVERY FILM. In fact, it should be an extra on every DVD that one can add them into pivotal moments.

I also bought some books, including the new David Liss one (well, it's new to me). This was a relief as I had wandered around the book store for ages looking for something that didn't make me writhe in shame when I read the cover blurb. It's all bloody vampires and touching stories of people operating bakeries in Baghdad while their girlfriend has a knitting book club that warms the hearts of crotchety old pensioners and divorced 40 year olds.

I'm not 100% certain (never having actually used one) but aren't you supposed to be able to play DVDs on Blu-Ray players?

Apparently you can. However, I am still bitter because I just bought a new DVD player (alright it was only $60 but still!) and I shall apparently be soon forced* to buy a blu-ray one. How I suffer!

*For definitions of forced that include 'wanting to see deleted scenes for a crappy movie'

Bluray players do play DVDs; don't know if any of them are hackable for multiregional purposes though.

David Liss was in my year in grad school. He never defended, though -- he already had his first two-book contract by then, and he just moved to Texas when his wife got a job there. Like everyone else my year who played with the idea of turning their dissertation topic into a historical mystery and did NOT (and that was a fair number of us), I am far too resentful and have only read one of his books. ;-)

And people say the internet does not inform! I never knew that and now feel rather stupid. I still don't really one to buy one, though I guess I shall end up if this is what is necessary to see the no doubt magnificent alternate ending to Clash of the Titans.

I think the latest Liss book isn't his best, if that makes you feel better. :)

I have not seen the movie and I may never get to it, but once in a while I proclaim, Release the Krakens, mostly to my cats. I have no idea what Krakens are. 8 ]

There was a period when I would go around work happily asking people to release Kraken. I would also tell them to 'ease their storm' because surely no one can object to storm easing?
