BSG, oh the stupidity

I don't really have great thoughts on this episode and its fiesta of Lee angst but I will say that most of the people of the fleet appear to be too stupid to live. Okay, so say I'm a criminal king-pin running an illicit operation in a fleet which would get blown away if it were not for the presence of military fire-power. I would make it my business a) not to kill off in a heavy handed and obvious manner senior military personnel. If I wanted to kill them I'd make it look like an accident so my operations wouldn't be the focus for investigation. Also b) I would not threaten another senior military officer who happened to be the son of the guy in charge of the biggest guns and refuse to give him back a woman and her child. Because y'know I'd figure even if the child was paid for I could get another one and then maybe the big old battleship wouldn't decide to leave me behind next time the Cylons attacked. Or fire on me. Jesus, how did this guy ever get to run a large-scale criminal operation? Lee killing him was the best thing that ever happened to the Pegasus and its merry band of criminal idiots.
And how come in a population of less than 50,000 people the whole scale of the black-market and its central hub was a surprise to any one in charge? 50,000 people isn't actually a lot, especially when they're all crowded into small spaces. And I think there's be some talk and complaints to the president about the child prostitutes. Because people get upset about that sort of thing.
In conclusion, I am not astonished that Baltar's betrayal of the human race continues to go undetected as apparently the 12 Colonies were populated heavily by morons.
