Relgion on Battlestar Galactica
Apr. 5th, 2005 11:47 pmI was thinking about the gods of the humans on this show and wondering how they matched up with Greek mythology and then moved on to wondering what stories this society tells about their gods. Are they as cruel as the Greek gods? As irrational? As prone to defending their honour over perceived slights? We've been given so much to go on and also so little.
Is this why the Cylons think their religion is superior? When someone prays to Artemis do they pray to her as goddess of the hunt and wild places? Does she have a darker side or are we to imagine her as purer than her Greek incarnation?
It does make a difference how you think of Apollo as a name if you know that Apollo is a god traditionally associated with the overthrow of women (as at Delphi) and male rationality.
So how close is the alignment - is it just names and a pantheistic religion or is there something more?
