Mars and Bollywood
May. 2nd, 2007 10:35 pmOh flist who knows all:
1. Is there actually an official version of the Tdrama Mars with English subtitles? If there is I'd like to buy it, but I am not sure where to look. (I can't seem to find it on Yes Asia).
2. Outside of nehaflix and ebay where is a good place to get Bollywood? I want to get Oh Darling Yeh Hai India and it's not available on either. I fear some of the sites out there.
3. Where do you buy (translated) manga online? There are some shops here I can go to but I'd also like a good online source.
Thanks very much!

I wouldn't mind dling a bit of Mars to see if I cwant to buy it in its entirity. Which is not a great idea as I have to move in a few months and am not supposed to be getting more stuff...

LOL. Very few Taiwanese dramas are officially subbed and no Japanese ones are. Korean ones, OTOH, are quite good about having official subbed versions. You should really try Goong (Palace). :)

Sadly the ones I've bought that were official were unintelligible. (My favourite being the one that subtitled English with entirely different and incomprehensible English.) It's a pity as I rather like to buy the official versions if they're available - and it's not as if the tv station here that runs soaps does have them with decent subtitles, so I have no idea what's going on.
Re: official subs
Date: 2007-05-05 04:30 am (UTC)There are some gorgeous quality pirates out there (e.g. my version of jdrama Tatta Hitotsu No Koi) but any Japanese drama DVD with English subs is a pirate. They do not release English subs.
Re; Korean dramas. You must have gotten pirates, which are hard to tell from official versions at first glance. Sometimes you luck out and the subs are fine and sometimes they are like binary through a wet cloth.
Here is how to tell a Korean dvd set is official or pirate.
1. If it's a YA Entertainment release, it's official and the subs are excellent. Most likely, it will be region 1 and not region 0, as well.
2. It has English and Korean subs but no Chinese subs. More likely to be official. If it has Malay subs in addition to English, it's 50-50.
If you want to make sure you are getting good subs, I can link you to a whole bunch of internet sellers where I know subs are good and I've dealt with them before.
Re: official subs
Date: 2007-05-05 07:17 am (UTC)The mad Korean subs thing also perplexes me: so some pirates just do terrible translations of their own? Why not just rip off the good quality official ones?
But I would like the addresses of good internet sellers. I've had luck with most of what I've gotten but there were a few truly bizarre ones (luckily they weren't ones that I was hung up on or looked amazing.)
